Organizing Images with Zones

A zone is one body area photographed on one date: the overview photographs of the area together with the dermoscopy close-ups taken alongside them. Zones appear as cards in the Image Pool and open into Zone Review, where the overview, its close-ups, and the patient's lesion records are read on one surface.

Zone Cards in the Image Pool

Zone cards sit inside their date group in the Image Pool, ahead of the loose images of that date. See Uploading and Organizing Images for the pool itself.

A zone card carries:

• Designation: the body-area label of the zone.
• Count chips: images, then dermoscopy images and lesions when there are any.
• Tag chips: the tags assigned across the zone's images.
• Member mosaic: a thumbnail for each image, primary image first, with a "+N" control after eight.
• Show all: expands the full member rows beneath the card; Hide all collapses them.
• View Zone Details: opens the Zone Properties drawer.

In list view, a zone occupies one row that expands into its member rows. Opening any member opens Zone Review focused on that photograph.

Create a Zone

1. On the card or list row of an image that belongs to no zone, select Create Zone. That image becomes the zone's overview photograph.
2. Enter a Designation (required, up to 200 characters). Suggestion chips offer body-area presets and the designations already used for this patient. Laterality in the presets is the patient's left and right. When other zones already carry the same designation, a line below the field says how many.
3. Under Add dermoscopy images from this date, select the close-ups that belong to this area. Only images from the same date that belong to no zone are listed.
4. Select Create Zone.

The zone takes the date of its first image, shown as the Effective Date. The date can be changed afterwards in Zone Properties.

Overview and Dermoscopy Roles

Every image in a zone has one of two roles:

• Overview: the regional frame. Lesion marks are placed on overview photographs only.
• Dermoscopy: a close-up. Each dermoscopy image can be linked to one lesion record.

One image is the zone's primary image, shown first on the zone card. The options control on a member row opens the Zone Image Options drawer:

• Role: switches the image between Dermoscopy and Overview. A switch that would remove lesion marks is unavailable until the marks are removed in Zone Review.
• Set as Primary Image: makes the image the first thumbnail on the card.
• Remove from Zone: returns the image to the pool as a loose image; no image is deleted. The last image of a zone cannot be removed; dissolve the zone instead.

Review a Zone

Zone Review opens full screen, with the Zone Review chip, the date switcher, and the sync status in its header.

• Images, on the left, lists the zone's photographs in groups: Overviews first, then one group per lesion with the close-ups linked to it, then Dermoscopy for close-ups not linked to any lesion. Selecting a photograph centers it on the canvas.
• The canvas, in the center, carries the annotation tools, the Mark tool for lesion marks, and the Image Filter control. An image filter stays active while moving between photographs.
• Lesions and Lesion Details, on the right, hold the patient's lesion records. Creating, linking, and deleting lesions is covered in Documenting Lesions.

On a narrower screen, the image list becomes a compact picker above the canvas, and the lesion panels open from buttons below it.

Dermoscopy Series Across Dates

Each zone belongs to one date. A follow-up visit gets its own zone with the same designation, so each visit keeps its own photographs and marks. The patient's zones that share a designation form a series, and the date switcher in the Zone Review header moves through it:

• The chevrons step to the older or the newer zone.
• The pill shows the displayed date, followed by "Latest" on the most recent zone or its position, such as "2 of 4".
• Opening the pill lists every date in the series, most recent first.

Choosing another date switches the whole surface to that visit's zone. The selected lesion stays selected, and the canvas centers the overview carrying that lesion's mark where there is one. A clinician can follow one lesion's close-ups visit by visit without leaving Zone Review.

Filtering Zones by Tags

Tags are assigned to the images in a zone, and the Image Pool tag filter applies to those images. While tag filters are active, a zone card shows only its images that carry a selected tag, its count reads the match (for example "2 of 6 images"), and a zone with no matching image is hidden. In workspace selection, Add all to Workspace adds only the matching images. See Tag Management for building and assigning tags.

Zone Properties

View Zone Details opens the Zone Properties drawer:

• Designation: edited in place, with the same suggestions as when creating a zone. Renaming a zone moves it to the series of its new designation.
• Effective Date: changing it moves the zone to another date group in the pool.
• Add Images: adds pool images that belong to no zone, as overview or dermoscopy images.
• Counts: images, dermoscopy images, lesions, and the date the zone was created.

Dissolve a Zone

Dissolving removes the grouping, not the photographs: every image returns to the pool as a loose image. Only Clinician accounts can dissolve a zone.

1. In Zone Properties, select Dissolve Zone.
2. Type DISSOLVE ZONE and confirm.

Until the retention period ends, a Clinician account can restore the zone from the Deleted Items drawer on the Patient Details page. Where the practice deletes records permanently, the confirmation asks for PERMANENTLY DISSOLVE ZONE instead, and the zone cannot be recovered.
