The workstation queue
One signed-in computer becomes the bottleneck for a whole clinic day. Photographs taken in the treatment room wait on the machine that holds the record, and the schedule queues behind whoever is sitting at it.
Work that restarts in the next room
Moving from the front desk to the exam room means finding the same patient, the same entry, and the same comparison again on a second screen. The record survives the walk down the hallway; the place you had reached in it does not.
Consultations around one monitor
Clinician and patient crowd the same display to look at the same photograph. Describing a region out loud leaves room for the patient to picture a different one.

Live co-editing
Entries can be edited live on more than one device at once, and open views update as changes arrive from the others. No refresh, no reopening the record to find out what the tablet in the next room recorded.
Account-wide presence
Two signals rather than one guess: the sync status indicator on an open record reports whether it is open elsewhere and in how many other sessions, and an account-wide session pill names what is open on another device.
Session handoff
The session pill lists what is running elsewhere and opens the same destination on this device, so the review continues instead of being reassembled. The other session keeps running; nothing is taken away from it.
Autosave
Entry, image, and full body session work is stored as it is made, and the save-status indicator carries the state from Saving through Saved with the time of the last save. There is no save button to forget on these surfaces.
Undo where it belongs
The drawing surfaces keep an undo and redo history for the session, and the patient record stages field edits behind a change counter with a revert on every field, so a correction is one control away.
Reconnection catches up
A device that drops off the network reconnects on its own and reloads the current state on the way back in. Pending edits keep trying until the connection returns.

Point at anatomy, not at the screen
Live Pointer is drawn straight onto the image the patient is watching, on the consulting-room display or the projector it is shown through. Freehand circles and arrows land where the words would have been approximate, then fade on their own.
The record keeps up
Captions and entry notes written during the consult are stored as they are made and reach the other open devices on their own. Nothing waits to be re-entered once the room clears.
Common questions about real-time sync
What syncs, what happens on a dropped connection, and where the traffic goes
No. Sync runs inside the practice installation alongside the rest of Atlas, set up by Dermi Atlas Manager, and devices reach it over the local network. An internet outage does not interrupt sync between the devices in the building. Connectivity is needed only for periodic license verification and optional software updates, both separate from sync and both able to wait for a convenient moment.
Entries can be edited live on more than one device at once, and each change is stored as it is made and carried to the other open sessions. Where the same entry notes are written from two sessions, Atlas does not quietly pick a winner: the second save is reported as a conflict, with the choice to retry and keep this version or discard it and load the newer one. Elsewhere the most recent saved change is the one that stands, and the interface says so rather than hiding it: the sync status indicator reports when a record is open in another session, and the viewer and comparison surfaces carry a note while another session is present.
Live Pointer belongs to the moment. Its strokes are painted on the display where they are drawn, fade within seconds, and are never written to the patient record or carried to other sessions. Annotations belong to the file: arrows, shapes, freehand strokes, text, and pins saved with the image, anchored through zoom, pan, and alignment, and visible wherever that photograph is opened. A consultation often uses both, and the annotations page covers the persistent side in full.
Work already made is not lost. Saving is retried automatically, and a pending edit keeps trying until the connection returns instead of failing on the spot. The application reconnects on its own and reloads the current state on the way back in, and a short grace period covers a tab returning from sleep so a brief interruption is not announced as an outage. If a save does fail, the indicator says so and offers to retry it.
Not in the on-premises deployment. Sync runs inside the practice installation alongside the rest of Atlas, on infrastructure the practice operates, and sync traffic stays on the local network. The only routine outbound connections are periodic license verification checks, which carry no patient data. The architecture is designed to support HIPAA, PIPEDA, and Australian Privacy Act requirements; custody of the records stays with the practice, and the practice remains responsible for its own access policies and physical security.
Any device on the practice network running a standard web browser, which covers desktop workstations, tablets, and smartphones, and Atlas can be installed as a Progressive Web App (PWA) on top of that. On iPhone and iPad, the free Atlas Companion app adds native access and reference-aligned camera capture over the same local network; a Companion session is named as such in the session pill.
